A New Year

by

Today is the last day of 2022 and I don’t know how to feel about this.

On one hand, it’s exciting to think about 2023 and its unlimited potential, and on the other, I wonder where 2022 went and how much time I wasted.

Will 2023 follow in its footsteps, another mediocre year without much to show? Or, will it be a pivotal year to begin transforming myself and my life for the better?

Only time will tell, but there might not be much time left.

For all I know, 2023 could be my last year alive. Anything could happen. I could get into a terrible car accident which immediately kills me. I could also get diagnosed with an aggressive, late stage cancer and only have a few months to live. Though unlikely, these two outcomes are possible and might await me next year.

I don’t know this though, and I won’t know it until it happens. However, keeping this reality in mind helps me become more aware of the limited time I do have left. I am not immortal like a vampire, so I only can do so much.

What should I do with my life?

This is a question that most, if not all, of us have. Because we were born in this world with the freedom to make any choice we want, the possibilities are endless. And with this being our only life (as far as we can tell or prove), this produces a lot of pressure. What if we end up wasting our time? What if we do the wrong thing?

I wish I had an easy answer, but I don’t. No one can truly tell us how to live our own life. While we can try to follow what other people tell us, such as parents or religious leaders, ultimately we must accept how our life turns out, for better or worse.

Therefore, we ought to take great care with the choices we make each and every moment, for they determine our future and we cannot blame anyone but ourselves for that.

Life is not a safe and predictable story, it is a dynamic adventure that is continually changing based on the choices we made yesterday and make today. There is no right or wrong way to live. There is only experience which allows us to become wiser and stronger individuals.

As 2023 begins, take a deep breath and consider the following:

What do you want to do with your life?

How will you do it?
